Justice Nathaniel Roosevelt Howse, Jr. was appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court after serving as a Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County for 11 years and more than 33 years  as an attorney in Chicago.  Throughout his career, Justice Howse has demonstrated his commitment to justice.  Justice Howse asks for your support and vote  in the March 20, 2012 Democratic Primary.

LEGAL   EXPERIENCE

2009-Present::  On August 10, 2009, by order of the Illinois Supreme Court, I was assigned to the Illinois Appellate Court, First District, where I now preside.  I was found either “Highly Qualified”, “Highly Recommended” “Qualified or “Recommended” by all Bar Associations to serve as a Justice of the Illinois Appellate Court.

1998- 2009: Elected Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County in a County-Wide election in 1998.  Assigned to Traffic Court from December 1998 to November 1999.    In November 1999, I was assigned to the Presiding Judge ‘s office of First Municipal District as a “floater” judge who served in courtrooms where the assigned judge was absent or on vacation.  In April 2000, I was assigned to hear Supplementary Proceedings.  In June 2001 I was assigned to County Division where I served as  the assignment judge and motion judge for tax deed cases.

1976-1998: I was in the private practice of law for 22 years before joining the bench.  I practiced law with my father as a member of the firm, Howse, Howse, Neville and Gray.  I represented clients in trials and appeals before the Circuit Court, the Illinois Appellate Court, the Illinois Supreme Court, the Federal District Court and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.  I have represented a number of clients in “high profile” election cases.  I have made several presentations on the subject of election law before the Illinois Judicial Council, Chicago Bar Association, the Cook County Bar Association and Black Women Lawyers Association.
